CHALLENGE: Skinfood - let's make edible cosmetics

This will be a hands on workshop on how to make cosmetics from edible (that is safe, compostable and hence circular) ingredients.

Would you eat your cosmetics? Your skin does it every day. Unhealthy and even toxic substances can enter your body, they get washed into the environment and can cause lasting damage (e.g. microplastic beads in toothpaste). Anja Fiedler from the great project ‘Stadt macht satt’ (the city feeds you) has collected and tested edible cosmetics recipies. After weeks of trying them out she is convinced: it’s fantastic!
For the OSCEdays Anja is wiling to share her recipies (though sadly she won’t make it to come herself) and @transitionmaike will add her personal favourite tooth cleaning powder that she has tested with great results for four years now.

As we need to plan the ingredients please help us by signing up (10 places available): http://doodle.com/poll/nf76sck6mkkxwsk5

This is the selection of recepies we will use in the workshop (please try them and give your experiences and tips in the comments. New recepies always welcome, we’re constantly collecting, improving and trying out new recepies).

Please note: always work on a clean surface and with thoroughly washed hands. Sterilise utensils and containers by a) immersing them in boiling water or steaming them in a pot for a minute b) wiping or immersing them in 90% alcohol (buy in pharmacy). Cook and cool down water before use. This way you don’t need preservatives and avoid early mould/ rot development.

Preferably use high quality and organic ingredients without additives (such as anticaking agent in salt).

tsp. = teaspoon
tbsp. = tablespoon

Tooth cleaning powder

1 tsp. dried mint/ sage/ camomile
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt (flouridised)

Grind ingredients thoroughly and put through a fine sieve to get a fine powder.
To use dip moist toothbrush into the mix (ca. 1 pinch).

Store in an airtight container to preserve the volatile essential oils.
Keeps ca. 3 months in dry climate.

Coffee peeling

Version 1 (for normal skin)

1 tbsp. olive oil (extra vergine)
1 tbsp. used, moist coffe grind (just keep what’s left from your morning coffee)

Mix well. Apply with a soft massage, rinse with warm water. Best used under the shower as it’s a bit messy, excess oil is soaked up by the skin within a short time.

Keeps 1 week refridgerated, 1-3 days room temperature

Version 2 (for dry skin)

1 tbsp. 100% coconut fat
1 tbsp. used, moist coffe grind (just keep what’s left from your morning coffee)

Keeps 1 week refridgerated, 1-3 days room temperature

Version 3 (for blemished skin)

½ tbsp. 100% coconut fat
½ tbsp. olive oil
1 tbsp. used, moist coffe grind (just keep what’s left from your monring coffee)
1 pinch salt (no addititves)

Mix well. Apply with a soft massage, rinse with warm water, remove excess fat with a cloth. Best used under the shower as it’s a bit messy.

Keeps 1 week refridgerated, 1-3 days room temperature

Soothing face tonic

½ tsp. ginger (grate finely)
1 tbsp. cucumber (grate finely with peel)
1 tsp. olive oil (extra vergine)
100 ml water
1 pinch salt (no additives)

Put all ingredients into a jar, shake well, filter through a sieve, fill into a spray bottle
Keeps 1 week refridgerated, 1-3 days room temperature

Soothing face mask

to soothe irritated and dry skin, face cleaning in the evening

1 piece of soft, ripe banana
1 tsp. fresh cheese/ white cheese/cream cheese (German: Quark)
1 tsp. water
½ tsp. honey

Mash the banana, mix well with all the ingredients and use immediately. Allow to soak into the skin for a few minutes before rising off with warm water. Also makes a nice dessert to eat.

Lip balm

You can use pure butter or 100% shea butter (also helps with a red nose when having a cold).
Store in refridgerator and only take tiny amounts (1 tsp.) with you in a watertight container.

Deodorant

½ tsp. soda
100ml water
1-3 drops essential oil (or 1 tsp. oil-extract from lemon or orange peel: zest the peel and let it sit over night covered on oil, filter through sieve)

Put soda into a spray bottle, add water and oil, shake well.

Dry 'shampoo’

Instant help for those days when you don’t find time to wash your hair.

Put starch (corn or potato) into a fine sieve, sprinkle onto the greasy parts of your hair, massage and comb until the white, dusty look disappears.

Hand 'cream’

for dry and cracked skin: Rub hands with poptato peel or olive oil.

Face ‘cream’ and body 'lotion’

Apply olive oil on moist skin after washing, the oil will soak into the skin within a minute.
OR apply whipping cream.

Recepies to try at home (sorry, no shower @ Agora ;-))

Shampoo

for normal hair

1 egg yolk
1 tbsp. apple vinegar
1 egg white
20ml beer

Beat the yolk with the vinegar, beat the egg white seperately, mix beer and the egg white into the egg yolk mix. Massage into wet hair, rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Don’t keep remains as the liquid separates and the egg may go off easily.

Conditioner

Version 1 (for thin and static hair)

20ml apple vinegar
100ml water

Rinse hair after washing with the solution, don’t rinse with water afterwards, allow to dry naturally (no hair dryer). The sour smell disappears when dry.

Keeps a week at room temperature, 2 weeks refridgerated

Version 2 (for very dry hair)

1 egg yolk
2 tsp. lemon juice
20ml beer
1 tbsp. strong alcohol (40% e.g. Wiskey, Rum, Cognac)

Beat the yolk with the lemon juice, mix in beer and alcohol. Massage the mix into wet hair, rinse thoroughly with warm (not hot) water.

Don’t keep remains as the liquid separates and the egg may go off easily.

Version 3 (for itchy calp)

250ml apple vinegar
1 cup fresh leaves of stinging nettle

Heat the vinegar (don’t boil), pour over the leaves and allow to sit for min. 15 minutes, remove leaves. Rinse your scalp with the still warm mixture.

Cool! Are there some of the recipes online? Some resources you can share here?

yes, I just need to translate them and proof-read the German.

Cool. But posting them in german is a good start as well

Trial runs:

  • tooth cleaning powder: 4 years in use, better teeth and gums than ever before, dentist is happy too.
Do NOT leave out or reduce the amount of dried herbs! too much salt is abrasive on the gums.

  • shampoo: it works, it feels good, but it’s rather expensive when you take eggs from happy chicken.
alternatives: chestnuts, chopped into small pieces and soaked in water, poured through sieve, the liquid works, but not as well and it’s a lot of work.

  • dry shampoo: do NOT use flour, the wheat (or rye) proteins will mix with the body moisture and make a gooey mass. potato or corn starch are virtually identical.

  • coffe face mask: wonderful! use while showering, it’s quite a mess!

I’m planning to repeat the workshop for anyone who couldn’t come. We could also try to cook soap from used cooking oil: http://joosoap.files.wordpress.com/
Please let me know if you’re interested.
