[GLOBAL REPORTING 15] How to conduct an interview (Global Reporting OSCEdays15)

(part of the OSCEdays15 global reporting [GR15].)

Live-Streaming Program Overview

How to conduct an interview in for the OSCEdays Main Channel? A quick guide.

(Experimental status. Let’s see if this works.)

#(1) Set up the tech

Start this 20 min before the interview:

  • Login to the Google Plus Account of the OSCE days
  • Create a new „Hangouts on Air“ - don’t start the broadcasting yet
  • Give the hangout-event the name of the city you will interview (e.g. „HELSINKI“)
  • Copy the text below (add the right links of course) and post it as a comment under the announcement of the upcoming Hangout on the OSCEdays Google Plus Accounts Wall:

For VIEWERS: click on „live-stream“ above (starts >>> ADD CORRECT STARTING TIME LIKE „2 p.m. UCT“ <<<)

For >>>ADD NAME OF THE CITY HERE, E.G. „HELSINKI“<<<: click this link: >>>ADD LINK OF HANGOUTS HERE – IT IS THE LINK IN THE URL BAR OF THE BROWSER WINDOW WHERE YOUR VIDEO IS ALREADY VISIBLE<<<

For QUESTIONS: Click on this link >>>ADD THE HANGOUTS LINK FROM ABOVE ALSO HERE<<< You can ask questions in the chat. Maybe also via Video.

E x a m p l e :

For VIEWERS: click on „live-stream“ above (starts 4 p.m. UCT)

For HELSINKI: click this link: http://google.hangouts

For QUESTIONS: click on this link http://google.hangouts… You can ask questions in the chat. Maybe also via Video.

  • Once the person from the city you are about to interview has appeared and the time is right you can start the broadcasting by hitting the „start broadcasting“ button at the bottom of the screen. You are now live!

#(2) Using the Tech

  • There is a director function at the left side bar. Click on it and you can disable all the microphones and the video from people that join the call to ask a questions. This is a way to make sure, that just the city you are interviewing and yourself are visible in the video. Later in the interview you can play with enabling the video and microphones during the Q&A to allow the community to be visible and hearable not just with text in the chat.

  • Hangouts On Air offers more options yet to explore for the interviews. Experiment!

#(3) Conduct the Interview

Do it your style! This is just a suggestion for some questions:

  1. Hi, who are you? (Get the person(s) to tell something about themselve and also about the organization(s) behind the local event.)

  2. Tell us a bit about your event: Where is it? How many people have joined?

  3. Why do you wanted to join the OSCEdays? Why do you think Open Source and Circular Economy need to play together?

  4. Can you show us some of the challenges you are (were) working on? (Get the person to show you around the venue, present some things they did, introduce some local hackers and challenge examples.)

  5. Thank you. Now we have some time for questions from the community. (Are there questions in the chat? You too could have a look at them togehter and chat about them a bit, also during the interview where it suits.)

Try to make the interview not too long! 15 minutes max might be good. It is supposed to be just a teaser, an invitation to connect more to the pople and challenges in that city. But let’s experiment, what is the perfect time?

#(4) End & Document

After you ended the interview click on „stop broadcasting“. The video is now on YouTube and the posting on the Google Plus Wall becomes a link to the Youtube-Video.

If you have some time, try to create some shownotes. Find out the links for some of the things mentioned in the interview – of challenges, the organization etc. – and post them as a comment under the posting. You might also ask the viewers of the stream to do this for you during the interview or after it.
