[CHALLENGE] Imagine Zero Waste

deutsche Beschreibung unten

##Imagine Zero Waste

Are you an ecologist hacker? Or you consider that waste concept should be obsolete by 2020? Open source for a sustainable future is your motto. And … you are convinced that making this happen implies working together with grass roots activists, start ups, large corporations, scientists … ? The Imagine Zero Waste Challenge is for you!

Waste Management companies such as Veolia are heading towards circular economy approach via recycling and remanufacturing activities. They design and implement solutions in order to improve access, protect and renew resources. For the time being most of the business models are based on patent systems, and at the time open source solutions show fast innovation capacities and turn to be very efficient to protect resources. This is why OSCE days is a great chance for this two worlds to meet and discuss about the future of waste management industry and its way to Zero Waste. Interested to be part of the encounter between open source and established companies to work on circular economy solutions?

##Workshop
Open Source and Circular Economy in the waste management branch. How will the solutions of tomorrow for Imagine Zero Waste look like?

##Date
15 June 2015, 9 -12 a.m.
agora, Mittelweg 50, 12053 Berlin

Together with trainees and other collaborators of industry and waste management companies we want develop open source business models for the circular economy. We have a special focus on how relevant each of the five business models of circular economy (source: accenture)

  1. Circular Supplies (Provide renewable energy, bio-based or fully recyclable input material)
  2. Resource Recovery (Recover resources/energy out of disposed products or by-products)
  3. Product Life Extension (Product quality, Repairing, Upgrading, Reselling)
  4. Sharing Platforms (Infrastructure for new models)
  5. Product as Service (offer access and retain ownership)

is for the producing industry and the waste management companies and how they can have much bigger effects for the protection of resources via Open Source. The elaborated Open Source Business models will be presented during the panel discussion in the afternoon by one representative of the group. The relation between Open Source and the business model as well as its relevance for Imagine Zero Waste will be of special interest.

#Zero Waste Challenge

Workshop: Open Source Circular Economy – Zukünftige Geschäftsmodelle der Kreislaufwirtschaft

Termin: Montag 15. Juni 2015, Agora, Mittelweg 50, 12053 Berlin | 9AM

  1. Cradle-to-Cradle (Input Materialien: bio-basierte oder voll recycelbare Input-Materialien)
  2. Sekundärrohstoffe (Output Materialien: Rückgewinnung von Energie und Wertstoffen)
  3. Verlängerte Produktlebenszyklen (Produktqualität: Reparatur, Upgrading, Wiederverkauf)
  4. Sharing Plattformen (Plattformen: Infrastruktur für neue Modelle, Asset Sharing)

Great seeing so many people being interested to work on these questions! Thank you!
We would like to give you a more precise idea of our approach to get into discussions and to develop our output.

What we aim on is to find solutions or business cases for speeding up circular economy with open source instruments.

How can we get there? We propose to start from a broad view on the very complex circular economy. This means including in our reflection biological, technical and energy related circles as well as all steps of the product life cycle. The first question we should ask is:

In what part of the circle the use of open source instruments could cause the biggest impact?

Ones we have build up an opinion on that, we could have a detailed look on some concrete ideas like:

  • Open national platform for the secondary resources market

  • Open source information on constituent parts of products for facilitation of recycling

  • Open source and logistics

  • Open source at treatment and sorting plants

  • Longer product life cycle via remanufacturing / repairing / restoration

  • Secondary raw materials as input for FabLabs

  • Open source for increasing renewable energy production

  • Open source to support Veolia force activities

  • Open source and smart metering

For sure that you have a lot of other ideas and aspects to bring into our challenge!
We are looking forward to meet you Monday morning and get into interesting reflections and debates with an output that helps to speed up circular economy!
